The third and final album of Gerhard Dickel's remarkable recording of Bach's Orgelbüchlein. The OB pieces have been completed by few chorales from other sources fitting well into this amazing collection. Composed by J.S. in his (astoundingly mature) youth, these "musical icons" for the organ end in a restrained, slightly melancholic atmosphere. Pessimism? Far more a gate open to eternity which he ceaselessly anounced "vocaliter et instrumentaliter" throughout his life.
Gerhard Dickel's masterly interpretation on the two organs of St. Michaelis in Hamburg is - to my ears - the finest recording of the Orgelbüchlein I ever heard (I own about a dozen in my disc collection).
