    Comments:Review by Jan Hanford:

    Performance: extraordinary
    Recording: outstanding

These are transcriptions for viola da gamba quartet of some of Bach's chorale preludes, taken mostly from the Orgelbüchlein. Where the chorale preludes concur with a vocal chorale they perform the other BWV (marked with *, see above) adding the solo voices of the Tölzer Knabenchor, with amazing results. This cd is so beautiful that the day I bought it I left it in my cd player and let it repeat all day. They play these works very much like viola da gamba pieces, not solemn organ works. Fast and lively, slow and expressive; they're truly stunning. The independence of the voices reveals the polyphony more clearly, in my opinion, than on organ. The phrasing is excellent, with a range of tonal colors providing extraordinary details and nuances.

It's like nothing else I've ever heard and I'm delighted to have found this remarkable recording and give it my highest recommendation.
