Formerly released as Johann Sebastian Bach: Lute Music (Nonesuch N5 - 1137) (though the vinyl and cassette did not include BWV 995), this record is a masterpiece of understatement. Gerwig, who died in 1966, is sadly underrepresented and largely unknown today, despite Liona Boyd's assiduous praise of his talents. Although this album was recorded in 1964, it sounds as clean and clear today as it no doubt did in the studio on the day it was set to tape. It is to be hoped that this re-release will be the first of many from a gifted and unfairly neglected performer.
