Comments:Comments by Jan Hanford:

Daniel Barenboim is one of those musicians who's been around forever and has played literally everything. He's very much a "mainstream" performer. For that reason I expected his performance of the Goldberg Variations to not be good. I was happily surprised at how good it is. His performance is passionate, intelligent and highly musical.

The only unacceptable part of this release is that it is a two disc set, splitting the Goldbergs onto a second disc. In a market with nearly all recordings of the Goldbergs being released on one disc, I simply cannot deal with having it split. The inappropriate inclusion of Beethoven on the disc makes it even more unappealing. I don't like Beethoven and don't want it mixed with Bach. It's a kind of "peanut butter in my chocolate" situation that may appeal to some people but not to me.

If you're a Barenboim fan this is a must-have. If you're not then there are many other recordings of the Goldbergs from which to choose.
