Mr. Jacobs has been engaged in ancient music for long and this 1992 recording of Bach's mass in b minor ranks, to me at least, among the few best. Although the orchestration of this recording is of the HIP style, it employs a full chorus rather than the Rifkin or Parrot one vocalist per part practice. The RIAS Chamber Chorus is something lighter than the Klemperer one, but it nevertheless sounds full-rounded. The tempo is somewhere between the Solti dragging and the Gardiner haste. Of the soloists, the tenor Pregardien and the bass Selig, tho not of the powerful breed, are expressive. Selig's performance is here much better than in his Mozart masses. |
