From the accompanying notes and the renditions themselves it becomes clear that these sonatas consist of three parts: the middle part allocated to the viola da gamba, and the upper and lower parts assigned to the harpsichord. The viola da gamba is therefore not the solo instrument, but rather an equal partner to the harpsichord. To me, this is an engaging recording because the performers seem to closely identify with, and be fully involved in, the reflective (slow movements) and spirited (fast movements) music. This, plus the excellent recorded sound, brings to life music that is not exactly part of the mainstream of Bach's works, but all the more interesting because of it. (Oh yes, don't be discouraged by the CD's short duration: it's a budget-price issue!) (ADD) |
