This has just about all the choral music except the Cantatas. I don't usually rave about large box sets of twelve CDs, but I think this one is an exception. All the soloists are never less than competent - and competence can be a very high goal indeed in Bach - and the choral singing is outstanding. The Leipzig Radio Chorus has the majority of the work. Their diction and sense of understanding what they are singing about are rare in today's world of Euro-Bach authenticity. Schreier's conducting is usually fleet, carefully phrased, articulate and aware of the best practices of period-instrument ensembles. His readings of the St. John Passion and B minor Mass strike me as the best I've heard on modern instruments for about twenty years. Finally, the pricing of the set is really competitive, working out at about the same per disc as the UK price of Naxos CDs.
