Comments:Review by Jan Hanford:

Performance: excellent
Recording: very good

I have been a fan of Alexis Weissenberg since the 1970's and owned many of his recordings on vinyl. Therefore, I was delighted to discover this 3-cd set re-issue of his Bach recordings. His performance is excellent; at times with a feather-light touch and others a powerful energy. A few of his Goldberg Variations are sometimes extremely fast (perhaps a bit too fast for me) but the Aria is exquisitely gentle. His Chromatic Fantasy and Italian Concerto are of the best I've heard. The recording is surprisingly good with some minor tape hiss audible through headphones. But it did not interfere with my enjoyment of these outstanding vintage performances. It's a highly recommended recording for fans of Bach on piano.

This release is not available in the U.S. and I had to order it online from Amazon in England (amazon.co.uk). I'll never understand why record companies release such treasures only in Europe and not the U.S. Thankfully the internet has made the record companies' annoying error in judgement easy to overcome.
